Notwithstanding the excitement of the event, the World Cup is really part of a bigger story - The Road to the Olympics. Freestyle kayaking is a relatively new sport yet it dominates paddle sports. The reason is simple - freestyle has more mass appeal. In the old days (and that wasn’t that long ago) kayaks were very long. That meant two things, you had to be physically strong to handle the kayak both in and out of the water and secondly, the only way to increase the challenge was continually paddling bigger and bigger rapids.
The freestyle revolution began in the ’90’s as the kayaks become much shorter with more streamline designs. The smaller boats meant the learning curve shortened and for the first time less physical people could paddle, even kids. Improved boat design meant more tricks and moves in smaller rapids. There are few rivers with big rapids and a lot more rivers with smaller rapids. Freestyle kayaking greatly expanded the sport.
